Stadium Tours on Match Days

Madrid’s two stadium tours run inside working football grounds, and on match days the club comes first. Get the date wrong at the Bernabéu and you see the museum but not the benches. At the Metropolitano, Atlético states that its route can be changed or suspended for sporting or organisational reasons. None of this is a reason to avoid the tours, but it is a reason to check the fixture list before you book.

The Bernabéu on match days

Real Madrid’s rules are clear and published on the official ticket listing:

• On match days, the Tour Bernabéu can be taken up to five and a half hours before kick-off.
• The changing rooms and benches are closed on match day and the day before.
• The museum and panoramic view remain open until the cut-off.

One guided operator, Julia Travel, puts it more precisely: from noon on the day before a match until the stadium reopens afterwards, only the museum and panoramic view are available. Real Madrid also says the route and timetable can vary because of other stadium events and that it announces changes on its website, at the ticket offices and at the gate.

The practical result is that an evening match on a Saturday affects both Friday and Saturday. If the changing room and the benches matter to you, keep two clear days from any home fixture.

The Metropolitano on match days

Atlético is less specific, and deliberately so. The official guided tour listing warns that the stadium tour may be suspended or modified without prior notice for sporting or organisational reasons. The club’s own site adds that bookings on match weekends may be subject to change, and that unforeseen circumstances can alter the route.

The upside is a clear remedy: if the club changes or suspends your tour, you can exchange your ticket for another day. The standard ticket and the official guided tour on GetYourGuide also offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which is useful if a fixture is moved at short notice.

Atlético also turns match days into a product. Its own site sells a Matchday Tour, team-arrival packages and a warm-up experience for fans who want to be there when the team is.

Beyond match days

Fixtures are not the only thing that changes the route:

• Concerts and events can close parts of either stadium.
• The off-season. Madrid’s tourism office notes that from the end of the season until a week before Atlético’s first home match, the Metropolitano pitch may be without grass and the route altered. The Bernabéu’s retractable pitch is also stored away between uses, and operators warn you may not see the grass.
• Winter events. A recent reviewer found an ice rink around the Metropolitano, which changed the feel of the visit.

How to pick a safe date

1. Check both clubs’ home fixtures, including Copa del Rey and European matches, which are confirmed later than league games.
2. At the Bernabéu, avoid the match day and the day before.
3. At the Metropolitano, avoid match weekends if you can, and book a ticket with free cancellation.
4. Read the operator’s email the day before. Guided operators tell you there if the schedule has moved.
